When the Tall Ships Race visited Greenock and Lerwick in 2011, a total of 70 young people were supported by Scotland’s local authorities to take part in this major event. In February 2012, Council Leaders agreed to build on that success by working with OYT Scotland and YoungScot to support a new project to reach out to even more young people.

As a result, between June and October 2012 a series of five day voyages, involving crews of 12 young people, took place along the coasts of Scotland.  Each local authority had the opportunity to send at least three young people on this positive life changing experience, giving the participants new confidence and life skills, as well as the ability to gain valuable SQA qualifications.
This short video reflects the core values at the heart of Scottish local government. It shows how successfully councils can use preventative spending to share early intervention services, and just what can be achieved for hardest to reach groups as a result.
