COSLA RESPONSE TO UNISON RELEASE STATING THERE IS NO HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS

Councillor Billy Hendry, COSLA Spokesperson for Strategic Human Resource Management said:

"Councils do not for one minute underestimate or indeed undervalue the work carried out by local government staff in the delivery of services to Scotland’s communities. Council employees deliver essential frontline services that our communities depend on.  But we would doing a disservice to those staff if we did not take seriously the role of managing reducing budgets. Scottish Government only informed Councils of the Local Government Settlement in mid-December and it is prudent that Councils consider staffing costs within their wider budget considerations.

"Having said this, significant work has been done with all 32 local authorities since the claim was lodged, to understand what can be done to address the claim. COSLA Leaders will be discussing the claim at the end of January and an offer will be made to the Trade Unions immediately following this meeting. COSLA is committed to the maintenance of positive industrial relations, joint negotiation and the collective bargaining process and we look forward to the entering into further negotiations with UNISON, UNITE and GMB, under the auspices of the Scottish Joint Council."
