COSLA RESPONSE TO TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION STATUTORY RESPONSIBILITY QUERY

A COSLA spokesperson said: "Yes, councils have statutory responsibility for teacher recruitment.

"This [teacher recruitment and retention] is an issue where there are some problems.

"It is for these issues that a joint workforce planning group has been established with COSLA, SG, ADES, the unions and the GTC to look at the issue on a national basis across the board.

"In addition at an individual council level Councils have their own strategies in place for trying to alleviate some of the issues.

"A recent example of these local strategies was Moray council for offering housing incentives in a bid to attract teachers.  Aberdeenshire Council has also done something similar."
