COSLA RESPONSE TO MEDIA ENQUIRY ON SPRINKLERS IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS IN SCOTLAND

A COSLA Spokesperson said: “Scottish local authorities and housing associations have been working first and foremost to provide reassurance to tenants following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

“While the design of and safety equipment in domestic tower blocks is understandably of significant public interest, individual housing authorities have been scrupulously undertaking enhanced fire safety checks while we await any clear findings from Grenfell.  As such, it would not be appropriate to make blanket statements about sprinklers as the effectiveness and viability of installing sprinkler systems will vary by property.

“In the wake of this tragedy, it is important to be responsible with the messaging to tenants and our primary focus is working with our partners to carry out relevant checks and provide reassurance to our communities.

“Scotland’s councils currently also work closely with the fire service around all aspects of fire safety and COSLA has today been invited to a dedicated session with the Scottish Government’s Ministerial Working Group to look at a range of issues in relation to fire.”
