COSLA RESPONSE TO SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT ON NEW STEPS TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS

In its Programme for Government the Scottish Government announced new steps to tackle homelessness.

Responding on behalf of COSLA, Councillor Kelly Parry, Spokesperson for Community Wellbeing said: “Tuesday’s announcement sends a strong message that the Scottish Government and COSLA have a shared commitment to tackling homelessness and will ensure that this ambition is met with action.

“While Scotland’s homelessness legislation is robust and the commitment and innovation within the homelessness sector is one of our key assets, there is always more we can do. Rough sleeping is the manifestation of a range of factors and we hope this renewed mission can focus efforts on the root causes of homelessness which include poverty, mental ill health and relationship breakdown.

“Local Government has a key role to play in coordinating work at a local level and responding to the specific needs of their communities and we hope the 'Ending Homelessness Together' fund can complement councils' existing work to prevent and tackle homelessness."
