Local Government Settlement News release

Ahead of the start of the Scottish Government Budget process through Parliament next week, Council Leaders today (Friday) renewed their call for a fair settlement for local government, saying that anything else is a bad outcome for communities.

Commenting following the first Leaders meeting of 2018 in Edinburgh today, COSLA’s Resources Spokesperson Councillor Gail Macgregor said:  “Scotland’s Council Leaders today (Friday) renewed their call for a fair settlement for local government and said that a cut to local government is a bad outcome for local communities.

“The bottom line from Council Leaders remains clear – we need more money to protect essential services.

“Local government provides the essential services our communities need and want.

“We need a fair settlement for local government to allow us to do that and I would ask the Cabinet Secretary to consider this in his final deliberations ahead of Wednesday’s debate.

“Councils have essential services to provide to our communities and a workforce to support in doing so. With recent announcements on public sector pay, we need to respond and we need resources to do that.”
