COSLA comment on Glasgow City Council considering a working group for TVT

COSLA’s Resources Spokesperson Councillor Gail Macgregor has welcomed the news that Glasgow City Council is considering setting up a working group by to look at Transient visitor tax.

Councillor Macgregor said: "If this is the case, it is good to see this move by Glasgow City Council. COSLA is clear that a local Transient Visitor Tax, or levy, is a local tax for local determination. It would not be a Scotland-wide tax but a tax that could be introduced locally if the circumstances were right locally.

"TVT is rightfully a local tax, no one size will fit all and that is why Glasgow is right to set up working group to determine local circumstance.

"It is also worth re-iterating that TVT would be a tax on visitors and not on businesses. That it would generate revenue to contribute to the cost of maintaining public services vital to tourism; as well as enhancing the tourist experience. It would also provide an opportunity to strengthen local areas and in turn, Scotland’s ability to compete in global tourism."
