Southern Cross Healthcare / Argus Care

In response to the Southern Cross situation, COSLA, The Care Inspectorate and the Scottish Government have established a National Contingency Planning Group for Adult Care Services.

The Group was set-up to look at the overall preparedness of statutory agencies in addressing unforeseen circumstances that could lead to the disruption of adult care provision in Scotland. This will include any service disruption or cessation that arises from a business closure, an emergency situation or a public health matter. The situation earlier this year with Southern Cross falls into this category.

The Group draws its membership from statutory bodies, including the Scottish Government, Local Authorities, Health Boards and The Care Inspectorate.

The overarching objective of the group at this time is to ensure a smooth transition from Southern Cross care homes to new providers.

The information in the spreadsheet below is intended to give interested parties reassurance that new care providers have replaced or are well advanced in their plans to replace Southern Cross as care providers in Scotland. The registration process will scrutinise each new provider - registration is not automatic.

The majority of homes in Scotland completed the registration process by 31st October 2011. By 14th November 2011 all homes had completed the registration process.

Regarding Argus Care, 12 of their 14 homes have gone into administration. The administrator and landlords have given assurances on continuity of care, and new operators are running these homes and applying for care inspectorate registration.
