COSLA comment on teacher vacancies

A COSLA Spokesperson said: "It is difficult to comment on numbers as these fluctuate over the school year. However, that aside we do have concerns in relation to vacancies. Both COSLA and Scottish Government recognise teacher vacancies as an on-going pressure and are working together to get a better understanding of the issue and which subjects are most affected.

"Efforts are being made to avoid such vacancies going forward, but that cannot be resolved overnight. We know there appears to be a particular problem in rural areas whilst recognising that there are pressures on teacher recruitment in certain subjects that extend across the country.

"There is now a national website for vacancies and all councils are using increasingly creative options to encourage people into teaching and we continue to support those local campaigns."
