COSLA comment on public sector pay

COSLA Resources Spokesperson, Councillor Gail Macgregor said:

"No one is pretending the austerity of the past decade has been anything other than extremely challenging for the public sector in general and local government in particular.

"We have tried to protect our lowest paid workers by consistently applying or bettering the national Living Wage hourly rate, resulting in more of any available monies for pay being directed to those at the bottom end of council pay scales.

"We have made a revised and improved offer to the unions which will result in 99.7% of council employees receiving an increase of 3%. This represents an investment of £350m in the workforce at a time when no additional monies have been made available to councils to support a pay rise.

"None of us wants to see industrial action occurring and we trust that our workforce will recognise that 3% is a very fair offer and one which should be accepted."
