A joint statement has today (26th June 2026) been issued by COSLA President Cllr Morrison, and COSLA Community Wellbeing Spokesperson, Cllr Chalmers:

COSLA Leaders are appalled by the recent attacks, on the 19th June, in Edinburgh on the basis of race and religion. We are increasingly concerned with tensions and other violent events which have been affecting stability of communities across the country. We stand in solidarity with those who have been affected, their families and the wider Muslim community across Scotland.

There is no place for hate, discrimination or violence in Scotland. Local Government remains committed to ensuring that everyone can live free from fear or discrimination in their communities. Scotland has a proud history of welcoming people and supporting people so that all feel safe and included, and are treated with dignity and respect, no matter where they are from.

COSLA will continue to work with Scottish Government, local authorities, Police Scotland and partners to challenge hate in all its forms and promote a safe, diverse and cohesive society in which everyone belongs. We understand the urgency of the situation and will be prioritising joint action with Scottish Government to address escalating community tensions and division.
