COSLA has issued a statement in response to the EIS announcement it intends to proceed with strike action. Cllr Ricky Bell, COSLA Resources Spokesperson said:

“COSLA continues to discuss reducing class contact time with the EIS and the Scottish Government.  What is most important for councils is ensuring the best outcomes for our children and young people.

“For this to be implemented, councils require full funding and an assurance that reducing class contact time will have a positive impact on children and young people.  We therefore welcome the Scottish Government’s acknowledgement that additional funding is required.

“We continue to be committed to making meaningful progress alongside the Scottish Government and Teachers’ Unions on this through the SNCT, while ensuring that changes are developed in a sustainable and well-planned manner, prioritising what is best for children.

“With all of this in mind, including additional funding on the table from Scottish Government and COSLA’s commitment to making progress, it is highly disappointing that the EIS still insist on progressing strike action.”
