The Children and Young People Team leads on education and children’s services for COSLA. Its remit covers a child’s life from pre-birth through to post 16 education.  The team's work includes promoting and integrating children’s services, developing effective approaches to children & family social work, and addressing child protection and youth justice issues.

Main policy areas

  • Integrated children’s services (Getting It Right for Every Child), including children with a disability and young carers
  • Early intervention and prevention
  • Outcomes for looked after children including, corporate parenting; children looked after at home, foster and kinship care residential and secure care 
  • 3-18 Education including education policy; pre-school education; curriculum for excellence; examinations and education achievement and attainment; post 16 education; Additional Support Need

Team Functions

The team works closely with education and social work professionals in ADES (Association of Directors of Education) and ADSW (Association of Directors of Social Work) to develop policy; to respond to and influence legislation and Scottish Government initiatives, and to provide support to elected members of the Education, Children and Young People Executive Group.
  
The Executive Group is the national political voice of local government on education and children’s services and works to ensure that this voice is heard where it matters the most.
